Some think UI design is about drawing rectangles and pushing pixels around.
It's far from being the truth.
Here's what UI design is about (thread) 👇
1️⃣ UI design is very strict
UI design isn't only about making things look good. It follows (or at least should follow) very strict and precise rules to create visually stunning products that are consistent and speak to the genuine brand's values.
2️⃣ It's much more than the basics
Every UI designer needs to know how people read, how they scan content, what are the accessibility principles for people with disabilities, how to manage and update live projects, and systemize the work, so it all follows a logical flow.
3️⃣ It's extremely structured
You can't just mindlessly design stuff. This might go unnoticed with small solo projects, but it's a different story with bigger teams.
You need to keep your files organized so everyone on your team can easily understand them, especially devs
4️⃣ It’s systemized & consistent
You need to be very detailed and thorough with your application of design patterns to align with all accessibility standards to create functional products, pleasant to look at and easy to use.
You need to keep a systemized file.
5️⃣ UI ≠ UX (?)
If you’re a solo freelancer designing products for clients, you need to understand UX, period.
You cannot build a good product without conducting proper research and analyzing your findings.
6️⃣ It’s more than pixels
How often have you looked at an app and didn’t notice how it’s designed? What font sizes does Uber use? Why is it so easy to navigate? Why can you just mindlessly swipe through your Instagram without thinking?
It's because good design is invisible.
7️⃣ It’s about the presentation
You need good presentation skills to show your work and explain the reasoning behind your design choices. You need to educate your clients if they’re wrong.
You’re there to guide them.
8️⃣ It’s about your expertise
If you want to charge premium ($15k+) you need to be more than "just" a designer. Your clients must trust your judgment and know you’ll help them solve their problems.
You’re the doctor. They’re the patient.
This is it from me, guys! 🙌
