So now question is what is the real story and is this sister-brother festival?
So, I was going through our Scriptures to get to the source of origin of Rakshabandhan. I found a small link in Bhavishya Puran (Uttar Parva Chapter no 137) and Narad Puran, which says that
So, I was going through our Scriptures to get to the source of origin of Rakshabandhan. I found a small link in Bhavishya Puran (Uttar Parva Chapter no 137) and Narad Puran, which says that
when the Demons were defeated in Devasur sangram, Bali along with other Demons approached their Guru Shukracharya to know the reason of their defeat. Shukracharya told them that Indrani Sachi had tied a protection source i.e Raksha sutra in Indra's hand
which became the reason of his remaining invincible and undefeated. This was the story told by Krishna to Yudhishthira along with the rituals attached to it.
In Vedic period the Purohit tied a thread with a small pack or potli i.e Raksha sutra in silken cloth with auspicious things like rice, yellow mustard,
sandalwood etc kept in Tamra patra by chanting the Shloka
येन बद्धो बलि राजा, दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः । तेन त्वामभीबध्नामि, रक्षेमाचल माचल। (Bhavishya Puran, Uttar Parva 137.20).
But with the passage of time this ritual was practised with changed connotations.

In a mammoth way this ritual turned into a festival relating to brothers and sisters. Irrespective of caste or creed, the sister ties the protective thread to brother's wrist and expects that may this relation remain everlasting and they be a source of joy and protection.
I have attached Hindi translation and source from Bhavishya puran too for Hindi viewers, do read it.
