I spoke to one of my mentors, Antonio Barea [@a2barea], about this...
David Garcia: How would you define the role of a youth football coach? I would assume itâs changed throughout your career.
Antonio Barea: Unfortunately it hasnât changed much because we have confused things.
David Garcia: How would you define the role of a youth football coach? I would assume itâs changed throughout your career.
Antonio Barea: Unfortunately it hasnât changed much because we have confused things.
Antonio: Better yet, we have replaced things. We have replaced direct football, the âI say, you doâ, the dictating coach, for the âwe always have to play out of the backâ and âI am a really cool guy who is good friends with my playersâ, the modern coach.
Antonio: So weâve replaced things, but we still donât help players, at least, the majority. Itâs true that there are more and more coaches who realize that it doesnât work like this. But the majority of coaches, or at least the ones I see, have replaced these things.
Antonio: The trend nowadays is playing out of the back, to be a cool guy, and to be friends with your players. Before the trend was to play direct, play simple, and be authoritative with your players. So weâve replaced some values with others, but that doesnât mean weâve evolved.
Antonio: To be a good coach is other things. Each trainer should be worried about helping them with their development not about winning the league so they can coach the older teams or better divisions.
Antonio: Because ultimately, weâre not talking about a youth program for players but in reality a program for coaches, because in this system the coaches want to improve, and they do so by using the players, and the results, and they give no importance to development of players.
Antonio: Nowadays, I see many coaches who use their teams to promote themselves. In the end, the person who makes the decisions doesnât know about football.
Antonio: Many times, the president of a club or the board sits down to decide who the coach of the U13s will be the following year, and theyâll choose the person with the best results in the U12s.
Antonio: This false indicator of a coach; they could have had an amazing team with incredible players. You understand? I think we have evolved a lot but not as much as we think.
David: Itâs all about trends, isnât it?
Antonio: But we donât know why. A coach might play out of the back, but he wonât know why. We donât understand football. We confuse the objective with the means.
Antonio: But we donât know why. A coach might play out of the back, but he wonât know why. We donât understand football. We confuse the objective with the means.
Antonio: My means is playing it out of the back to accomplish an objective, but the means is often transformed into an objective. âMy objective is to play out of the backâ - No, youâve got it backwards. We canât confuse one thing with another.
