Traditional school spends 12 years teaching some highly detrimental lessons to your kids.
Some of the most insidious:
1. Learning is coercive and unpleasant
2. The authority is always right (they're not)
3. Success comes to those with a permission-based mindset (it doesn't)
4. Subjects like math and reading and writing are academic and boring (they don't have to be!)
5. Last-minute cramming is an effective way to learn
6. The whole point of studying is to get a good letter grade. It doesn't matter whether you remember the information later or not.
7. Theory is a necessary prerequisite for experience
8. Your self-worth (and the approval of those around you) hinges on your test scores
9. Your personal passions and curiosities are less important than the standard curriculum
10. If you don't learn as fast as everyone else, you aren't smart
11. If you aren't good at academic subjects like writing and math, you aren't smart. (Whether or not you're a brilliant craftsman or people person is not relevant)
12. If you don't get an A, you aren't smart
None of these lessons are remotely helpful for your kids' learning, growth, or life success.
Kids need an education that:
β€’ nurtures their curiosity
β€’ plays to their individual skills
β€’ is built around their interests
And most importantly, teaches them learning can be fun.
