At its peak GDP (2008), Equatorial Guinea had a higher GDP per capita than Italy. But less than half of its population, then and now, has access to clean water.
GDP is orthogonal to actual well-being.

of course the reason why is oil. Even those purple and red squares are resource based (purple being petrochemicals and red being wood products).
