Unfortunately, many detractors of the emerging field of Black and Africana Philosophy claim the Works of its few existing Thinkers are almost entirely just about being Black 🧵
Is this fair? Are the philosophical works of the most prominent Black Thinkers in history just about being Black? Surely they must have contributed more to Global Thought than that? Here is an overview of the work of some Black thinkers claimed as notable by Contemporary Academia
PTAHHOTEP
Ptahhotep was Egyptian and as such African and as such philosophy can be said to have begun in Africa. Ptahhotep was a major originator of Egyptian Wisdom Literature which was an advanced intellectual tradition of recording folk proverbs AKA philosophy (it is claimed)
ANTON WILHELM AMO
Famous amongst scholars of Being Black C18th Black Man Amo was Black and not just Black but Black doing philosophy. What philosophy did he do? Amo was Black. We should place his Works at the forefront of the history of thought and teach them in every University
TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE
Haitian Revolution Leader. The Haitian Revolution was the only true Enlightenment revolution because it was the only one that took the principles of the French Revolution to their logical conclusion ie was about Black People. Haiti is now a thriving Nation
MARCUS GARVEY
Jamaican whose works focused on being Black (He was Black). Garvey opposed integration and mixing and advocated racial separatism and Pan-Africanism. He was so opposed to ‘mixing’ he was willing to work with the KKK to create spaces for Blacks to be Black in peace
W. E. B. DU BOIS
Thinker who detailed ‘Double Consciousness’ which describes how Black people (who are Black) are seen as Black by non-Blacks. In this way, around non-Blacks Blacks will always be aware of how Black they are because non-Blacks will, sadly, see that they are Black
AIMÉ CÉSAIRE
Creator of Negritude, a revolutionary field of critical theory which was about being Black - examining culture from the perspective of what if you were Black. In this way, it raises Black Consciousness and reminds Blacks and non-Blacks alike Black People are Black
FRANTZ FANON
If the Subaltern could speak, what he say? Very likely, “I’m Black”.
Fanon writes about Black, and about how Black means non-Black people see Black People as Black. He is Black but should not be treated as a ‘The Other’ but He is Black and should be treated as such
KWAME NKRUMAH
Ghanaian and Black Africa Independence Leader and Post-Colonialism Thinker. Understand! Even after Independence has been won the Black Man’s Nations may fail because he is kept down by ‘Neo-Colonialism’. Nkrumah was overthrown in a coup soon after coming to power

Malcolm X was a Black Civil Rights Leader known for being Black who thought a lot about being Black. His thought seeks to answer the fascinating question “What if Politics but you were Black?” In this way, his thought is a powerful insight into ‘What if you were Black’

Founder of ‘Sage Philosophy’, which argues that actually Africans have philosophical traditions. However, as Black People, their thought is incommensurable with any other thought and shouldn’t be critiqued by white standards. This isn’t the same as anthropology
