I've watched hundreds of foreign films over the years.
Here's a list of absolute masterpieces that you must watch:
1/ The Lives of Others (Germany)
In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives.
Top notch film about a man rediscovering his humanity.
2/ The Secret In Their Eyes (Argentina)
A retired counselor hopes to closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior.
One of the best mystery films ever. Look for the one-track shot in a soccer stadium.
3/ A Separation (Iran)
A married couple are faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent.
Every minute of this movie is gripping and perfectly acted.
4/ Wild Tales (Spain)
Six short stories that explore the extremities of human behavior involving people in distress.
A hilarious black comedy about road rage, weddings gone wrong, and more.
5/ Chungking Express (China)
Two Hong Kong policemen fall in love: one with a mysterious female underworld figure, the other with a beautiful waitress at a late-night restaurant.
My favorite Wong Kar-Wai film - a feel good romance that stays with you.
6/ Shoplifters (Japan)
A family of small-time crooks take in a child they find outside in the cold.
A quiet slice of life film about what it means to be a family.
