Philip of Novara gave some solid advice to young impressionable knights in 1260! He told them that while they should seek honor and try to become famous for their valor, they should also aspire to get rich and acquire land so they would be able to retire in their old age.
"The young man of high origin and the knight and other people bearing arms should work to gain honor so as to become famous for their valor, and to have earthly property and riches and land, from which they might live honorably and so might their children, if they have any."
Most importantly, he reminded them that they will not be young forever and they need to set themselves up financially when they reach old age! "And so they might help their friends and those who serve them and be able to retire in their old age."
His advice to knights was to get money and fame while they can! A similar advice they give to athletes today. Being a warrior knight was a young man's game. Philip of Novara did not want them to end up as old impoverished knight.
Philip of Novara had been a crusader knight his entire adult life in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and saw many knights come and go. He knew this life very well. By the end of his life, he passed on his knowledge to younger generations of knights by writing about his experiences!
