“Why do our children need cursive?!” 😭
I get asked this question quite often. So I’m going to share the importance of cursive handwriting 🌸 especially in Early Childhood.
1. Cursive develops the Fine Motor Skills of a young child.
This means; a child would have to fully focus on his/her pencil grip when forming cursive letters.
This practice improves their ability to tie shoelaces, tie knots, squeeze a sponge etc.
You will find that a child who struggles to write using cursive/form cursive letters, might not be able to tie his/her shoelaces.
2. Cursive Handwriting is SO IMPORTANT for children who may be dyslexic.
Cursive letters and print letters are not the same (few exceptions). However, cursive is easier for a dyslexic child to read from.
A more practical example:
The letter “b” and “d” can easily confuse a dyslexic child.
But the cursive formation of b and d may appear entirely different , thus, causing less room for confusion.
3. Cursive is also quite good at helping children with their spatial orientation.
This means a child is likely to learn the difference between “left, right, up, down.” quicker using cursive.
Letters in cursive have a strict formation that needs you to start at a certain point
4. My favorite!! - CONCENTRATION!!!!
Cursive really improves the concentration of a child due to its fine detail!
Take a child who is writing in print and place them with one writing in cursive.
Watch who will pay the most attention to their writing.
5. Increased writing speed.
Writing in print requires a lot “stop start. Pause etc.”
Cursive is joined letters which are ongoing. The more a child writes in cursive, the better their writing speed.
6. Hand-eye co-ordination.
Well, writing in print also develops this but I will add it.
You know that skill when a child has to aim during ball games? Yup. That skill is , too, developed during cursive writing
Having to look at the board and copying into the writing book.
7. A very underrated reason but cursive improves neatness due to how particular it is and the amount of detail required.
So a child is usually very careful during cursive.
8. For the artistic children? Cursive is sunshine and rainbows to them. 😂
It is mostly enjoyed by children who love art and decorating their letters etc.
Hence their letters to you are usually in cursive😂
9. I’ve said about the necessary bits of it but please remember...
cursive is not a waste of time 🌸🙏🏽
10. I don’t know if they still make them but I had this CD filled with cursive font that you just download onto your PC to practice with your little one.
It’s called ABC junior font....
If you’re able to get hold of it, it would be so beneficial, guys.🌸
