Guess what country was demoed first?- Nigeria. As the only Nigerian in the room, I expected it and thought it’ll be a fun activity particularly because I recognized the names of a lot of the people we were looking at.
Long story short, in less than two hours we had tracked multi million dollar properties owned by our favorite government officials (some of them weren’t even high up officials) in Dubai. Lol these were luxury real estate, from flats to commercial buildings and even hotels.
As a Nigerian this wasn’t in anyway shocking, I even laughed out loud when someone said “these people are rich rich”. It isn’t news to Nigerians that the wealth of public officials is really long but I’m so confused as to why the EFCC find it difficult to build cases against
corrupt government officials. I have no background or experience in investigations but in two days I’ve learnt how to track assets of people. These guys aren’t even careful enough to make it difficult by using proxies, layering or shell companies- they put their full government
name on these properties. Some of these people no longer occupy these positions, some are even getting ready to contest in the 2023 elections. I think the reason I’m so irate is the fact that majority of you all supporting these guys publicly will never be able to afford
any of these properties in their lives. The change you get from being beneficiaries of corruption will probably allow you spend a couple of nights at the Burj Al Arab but you’ll never own properties there so at the end of the day you all are still being fed crumbs by your masters
I hope that both rich & poor Nigerians wake up to how they enable people that are securing the future of their generations while constantly reducing the chances of survival of hundred of millions.
