When I watched this on my feed, I definitely felt in awe of this type of work and lifestyle. As I showed to my friends in medicine, much of their reactions were similar…amazement, jealousy, bitterness. Lot of my friends in medicine are in their late 20s/early 30s and have
sacrificed much of their 20s in pursuit of medicine with completing applications (med school, residency, fellowship), standardized tests, rotations, night shifts, battling the covid pandemic, etc. We are all aware of the increasing burnout in medicine.
My friends are in various fields including internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, cardiology, infectious disease. The experiences though vastly different and nevertheless uniquely similar.
As residents and fellows, we are often the front line workers in patient care whether it’s in the ER, clinics, or hospital settings. We are routinely up all night doing admissions or showing up at the MICU at 6 am.
I think the growing resentment among younger physicians revolves around one common theme: under- appreciation. When I see videos like this, I reflect on the disparity between other industries and healthcare (granted this video may be extremely atypical).
I don’t think the nature or hours of residency/fellowship can parallel these type of benefits seen in the video given the nature of the work, but there is continual room for improvement. We need to improve our industry so young doctors so they feel valued in the work they do.
Many residents and fellows love their work and I don’t think they could ever imagine working outside of medicine. However, when this type of lifestyle and work culture are present outside medicine, it can open questions and conversations.

This is something I recommend for everyone to read as well! Let’s try to improve the culture within medicine and the well-being of its employees!
