I grew THREE 6-figure businesses while working full-time with 2 kids.
These 4 simple habits will help you do the same:
Beginning in 2007, all the businesses I’ve been involved with have grown in the double or triple digits every year.
I’ve started 3 six-figure businesses online:
- ecommerce store
- ecommerce course
- blog
Plus raising two kids...
...all while working full-time as a hardware engineering director designing microprocessors.
I quit that a few years ago to focus on business and now the store and blog now both make over 7 figures in revenue every year
But I still had tons of free time.
Here's how I did it:
Habit 1: Avoid Context Switching
Context switching is when your brain switches back and forth between different tasks.
Your brain is like a computer, every time you switch tasks, it wastes a ton of energy and focus moving from one to another.
Have you ever tried to work only to find yourself browsing social media and then flipping back wondering where you left off?
Or looked at your “To Do List” and tried to tackle more than one thing simultaneously?
Every time you change tasks, you waste time and brain power.
Instead:
Aim to accomplish 1 or 2 goals each day and crunch through them with 0 distractions until you're done.
And by 0 distractions, I literally mean 0!
I don’t answer the phone. I don’t check texts. I don’t check email. Heck, I don’t even eat or drink! I’m in the zone.
This has 2 advantages:
- You don't waste time context switching.
- You have to prioritize well.
After all, when your objective is to accomplish only 1 thing for the day, that 1 thing better be important.
Habit 2: Ensure Forward Progress
Do you ever feel you’re working hard on your business but not making progress? Do you feel like you're just treading water?
Every single week there are a lot of “maintenance” tasks that need to take place just to keep things afloat.
In my case:
- Writing blog posts
- Recording podcasts
- Arranging interview guests
- Editing audio
- Answering emails
- Helping students
And a lot more!
Just to keep the motor running every week.
To GROW the business, I need to do more.
So to prevent stagnation I dedicate 1 day out of the week to making progress.
On that day I do ZERO maintenance tasks. Every minute is devoted to growth.
E.g. a brand new abandoned shopping cart sequence or a new ad campaign.
Progress is sometimes slow but always steady.
Habit 3: Outsource Repetitive Tasks
Podcasts are hard work.
There’s editing, image creation (for Pinterest) and show notes etc. I was spending hours each week on those.
So I outsourced everything except the interview and reclaimed my time.
Habit 4: Share Experiences
It's easy to get complacent when you've run your business for a while.
The best habit I've implemented is consistently meeting with mastermind groups.
By talking to other entrepreneurs, I’m pushed to try new strategies and tactics for my businesses.
- I tried Bing ads because one of my ecommerce buddies made fun of me for ignoring the #2 search engine in the US!
- I tried Facebook ads because of a talk I attended at a conference.
- I started selling on Amazon because Lars Hundley hounded me into submission.
When it comes to growing your businesses, it always helps to share your experiences with other entrepreneurs.
You don't know what you don't know.
By educating each other in regards to what’s working and what’s not, you can be more efficient with your time.
You have more time than you think - it’s just about reducing waste.
So:
- Focus on 1 task at a time.
- Dedicate one day towards growth.
- Share with others.
- Outsource repetitive tasks.
You WILL grow your business if you follow these 4 habits.
