7 lessons from the book “Deep Work” that will 10x the quality of your work:
1. Focus is a skill
At first, you might struggle to stay focused but the more you practice it, the better you get.
Remove any and all distractions (especially your phone) and make a daily habit of practicing the skill of focus
The better you get at focusing, the higher the quality of your work.
2. Deep work is king
Shallow work is what most people spend their time doing - and their results show.
Shallow work provides no value and requires low cognitive ability.
Start focusing on deep work, work that provides value and requires high cognitive ability
Remembering the 80/20 rule is a great help with this.
3. Daily rituals are powerful
Daily rituals (habits and routines) provide structure to your daily life
And this structure can help maximise your creativity and focus so that your deep work is almost automatic, instinctual, and easy to perform.
4. Willpower can run out
As you go through the day and use your willpower it will run out as you slowly take from your supply
You should schedule your day, your daily rituals, and your tasks around when your willpower is highest and when it's lowest.
5. Multitasking is a myth
You cant focus on more than one thing at a time, all you're doing is rapidly switching your focus and attention
Meaning that your focus is broad and not deep, resulting in poor quality work.
Stop multitasking and start focusing.
6. Remove distractions
Deep work essentially comes down to choosing a high-value task and focusing deeply on that task
If you are constantly being interrupted by either a notification, a colleague or emails - your focus is constantly being pulled away from the task.
Remove distractions and stay focused
7. You have 4 hours of deep work / day MAX
This is neurobiology and psychology - we can’t fight it.
So any high value tasks that you need to do? Give yourself 4 hours / day to get them done.
If you didn’t complete them, complete them tomorrow to ensure it remains high quality.
Performing deep work will require discipline, if you want to build your discipline
