Mindset shifts that helped me beat depression.
How I got my life back:
Depression is a common human experience.
One that we should be able to talk about openly.
The feeling of depression is heavy enough without any extra stigma to carry along with it.
I feel ZERO shame having these feelings, or speaking about them.
Alright, here we go:
1. I am not my feelings
I used to slap labels on myself all the time:
“I am depressed”
“I am anxious”
“I am” statements add a sense of permanence.
Instead say “I’m having anxious feelings”.
Always remember that all feelings are temporary.
2. I love myself
It might sound cheesy, but I struggled with this for years.
Life is difficult when you don’t love yourself.
A combo of daily affirmations and meditation, has completely shifted this for me.
If you want to love yourself more, start actively practicing it.
3. It's not too late
I remember being 22, and thinking my life was over.
The constant feeling of being “behind” in life became totally paralyzing for me.
As I got older I realized that no one has life figured out, and setting time limits on myself was complete nonsense.
4. I had to take responsibility
In order to beat depression, I had to stop playing the victim.
No one was coming to save me.
That’s not to say that you shouldn’t ask for help when you need it (you should).
But for me, things only got better when I took intentional action.
Other things that helped me:
- Building things I’m passionate about
- Support from friends and family
- 8 hours of sleep daily
- Reading books
- Working out
- Meditation
- Sunlight
- Therapy
I want to conclude by saying that depression can be a lifelong battle.
One that requires daily vigilance to stay on top of.
I’m not claiming these things are a cure for depression.
They are simply what helped me.
