Give me 2 minutes and I’ll show you how to focus 5x better than the average person:
In the future, 3 types of people will prosper:
• Capital owners
• Superstars in their field
• People who master technology
These require people to enter “deep work.”
Focusing without distractions enables maximum productivity.
Here’s how to access it:
1) Choose your philosophy
Figure out what kind of work environment is best for you.
There are 4 main ones:
• Monastic
• Bimodal
• Rhythmic
• Journalistic
Monastic:
Shutting yourself from all distractions.
Remove shallow obligations.
Bimodal:
Divide time into blocks (2 or 3 days a week).
This will be based on your schedule.
Reserve a few days for monastic work. Allow flow on other days.
Rhythmic:
Create a routine.
Stick to it.
Same time.
Every day.
Journalistic:
Theme your days.
Alternate them between deep work days and shallow work days.
2) Schedule in advance
Our willpower drains quickly.
Scheduling your deep work is essential.
Use Google Calendar, a planner, or a notebook.
Plan blocks of time you can work without interruption.
When deciding when a deep work session will be, think about:
• What time works best?
• What location has no distractions?
• How long can I perform deep work?
• Rituals (such as starting with coffee)
3) Execute
Most businesses pour 90% of their resources into figuring out what to do.
They forget about researching how to do it.
They get distracted by the end goal, not the process.
When doing deep work, remember:
1) Plan out your work ahead of time
2) Focus on the most important tasks
3) Track your performance with a weekly review
Don’t be afraid to cut out unimportant tasks.
Be ruthless with what is important to you.
4) Remove distractions
“Interruption, even if short, delays the total time required to complete a task by a significant fraction.”
- Cal Newport
We live in a time when distraction is easier than ever.
So, how can we counteract this?
Here are some tips:
1) Use noise-cancelling headphones
2) Work remotely
3) Check email only twice a day
4) Turn off phone notifications
5) Schedule internet time
6) Close all tabs at the end of a session
5) Give yourself downtime
We must balance long stints of concentration with sufficient rest.
If you finish the day and you’re still worrying about your presentation tomorrow...
Or if you’re thinking about what you should have said in that meeting...
Your brain isn’t resting.
When you rest, you gain new insights as your mind relaxes and processes.
As you learn about downtime, you’ll appreciate the separation more.
Day is for work.
Night is for rest.
Your brain will become healthier and stronger as you allow it to fall into this rhythm.
