How to build a sticky product:
Make your product feel more like Nintendo's Super Mario video game
Goal: make me want to play it and reach Bowser to save Princess Peach
I use the "Octalysis framework" everyday to make products feel like more a fun game than a boring chore:
Why stickiness matters?
Because without retention, your product won't work
If compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world, than retention is the 9th wonder of the world
#1 - Epic Meaning and Calling:
This is us saving the universe
This is our desire to be the hero, the main character of the story
This is the feeling of being chosen to do something
Highly motivating
#2 - Accomplishment
This is you progressing through school. Grade 1, grade 2, grade 3 etc
This is the process of facing challenges and overcoming them
You want to incorporate a mix of short-term accomplishments and long-term
#3 - Empowerment
The feeling that there isn't one way to solve a problem.
There are multiple paths, multiple combinations and your creativity can unlock it
For example: LEGOs, painting etc.
#4 - Ownership
If you own something, It's human nature to want to care for it more
From collecting trading cards to NFTs to sneakers, it's the reason so many of us nerd out about collecting
#5 - Social influence
Getting validation from friends and family is an important driver
It's the reason why many of us buy the products we do (whether we like to admit it or not)
#6 - Scarcity
Why do we want something when we can't have it?
Scarcity drives demand
#7 - Unpredictability
Great games feel like slot machines. You never know what will happen
Social products like Twitter often feel like this. If you tweet, I don't know if you'll get 1 like or 10000
This brings you back for more to try your luck
#8 - Avoidance
People avoid that feeling of a knot in your stomach, that sinking feeling
And it's human natures to do things that avoid that feeling
Example of the Octalysis framework at work by Yu-kai Chou
Caveat:
The key thing is to use gamification in moderation and when makes sense
Use in moderation
That's all for today, friends!
A fun weekend challenge: try using the Octalysis Framework on your product
I have it bookmarked on my computer and printed out
It's that helpful in designing compelling products in 2022
