It took me 8 years to learn this truth about learning ML.
I'll teach it to you in the next 5 minutes:
I used to think
β€’ If I complete this one MOOC
β€’ If I write 8 blog posts in 8 weeks
β€’ If I do well in a @kaggle competition
I will
β€’ have learned ML
β€’ my life will change in a substantial way
That didn't reflect reality.
When your mental map does not align with the world
β€’ you experience stress
β€’ you are less effective than you could be
β€’ you lose the ability to direct your life
The proper mental map is this:
The only thing that matters is doing something over months or years.
If you believe
β€’ @kaggle
β€’ blogging
β€’ doing MOOCs
β€’ something else
is your path, your only goal is to build it into your life.
To do it consistently over a long while.
Your short-term results do not matter.
Whether you feel you are learning or not doesn't matter.
All that matters is consistency.
There are no exciting destinations you can get to in life in 24 hours.
Or a month.
Or a year.
Don't write a single blog post. Write a hundred.
Don't participate in a single @kaggle competition. Keep competing for the next two years.
Change your perspective to change your world.
