Some more context for the @AHAhistorians jobs report that went up yesterday, taken from H-net job listings. First, TT-jobs listed by time of year. Many fewer jobs lately than even in 2010-2013; 2022 not on a great track, but note that 2021 had a late surge.
Fields of job, because the differences here are incredibly important. Jobs in European history kept dropping, unlike Asia and US that rebounded: growth in Black or Af-Am history continued in 2022 after record 2021.
Here are some of the smaller fields. Big increase in methodological listings like "History Education," "Public History," "Digital History", etc. Medieval history is showing its first glimmer of life in years.
This year I'll just put an updatable notebook with these charts at @bmschmidt/h-net" target="_blank" rel="noopener" onclick="event.stopPropagation()">observablehq.com. It includes various toggles if you want to see the full list of primary categories.
