The Science of Grounding
How skin contact with the earth can improve your health
🧵A Thread 🧵
Grounding refers to direct skin contact with the surface of the Earth, such as with bare feet or hands.
Our modern-day living encourages insulating footwear, high-rise buildings, and elevated beds that separate most humans from direct skin connection with the Earth’s surface.
But research demonstrates that this technique improves inflammation, the immune response, and wound healing and even has a positive impact on autoimmune diseases.
Electrons from the Earth may in fact be the best antioxidants, with zero negative effects, because our body evolved to use them over eons of physical contact with the ground.
Benefits of Grounding:
- improve sleep
- normalize the day-night cortisol rhythm
- reduce pain/stress
- nervous system parasympathetic activation
- increase heart rate variability
- speed wound healing
- reduce blood viscosity.
Let's dive into what some encouraging research says:
Wound Healing:
Wounds heal differently when the body is grounded. Healing is much faster, and the cardinal signs of inflammation are reduced or eliminated.
The profiles of various inflammatory markers over time are very different in grounded individuals.

Nervous System:
Earthing generates immediate changes in electroencephalography (EEG). Earthing through its action on the bioelectrical environment and alternations in electrolyte concentrations regulates correct functioning of the nervous system.

Reduction in inflammation as a result of earthing has been documented with infrared medical imaging and with measurements of blood chemistry and white blood cell counts.

DOMS:
Pain reduction from sleeping grounded has been confirmed in a controlled study on DOMS. Earthing is the first intervention known to speed recovery from DOMS.
