It’s now September, also known as Recruiting Season. You have learnt a skill, the fundamentals of a programming language, the full SCRUM process or how to successfully clean data and create good data visualization boards, now “What Next?”
This thread will explore various avenues and tips to help you secure a tech job/internship opportunity. It will also include a sample cold message that can be sent to recruiters which can be built into a cover letter. At the end of this thread, there would be 2 job openings that-
you can apply to if you meet the requirements.
Tip 1.
Publicize your projects and skills.
This is arguable the most important step to getting the interest of a recruiter. “Show” what you can do. Upload the projects that you have worked on onto Github, write a medium article-
highlighting your process: from querying your data to deciding what color scheme to use for visualization. Go for a Hackathon. Pushing a solo-project to Github and working in a team to Branch and Merge your codes to a group project would help with your Git Versioning as well.
If you don’t have a project, this would be a great opportunity to go out there and get your hands dirty. You can get development challenges on frontendmentor.io, and get Data projects from Kaggle.com
Tip 2.
Where can I find these jobs?
As a result of the lockdown, there has been a tremendous increase in job platforms and availability of remote jobs. Here are some of the names and links to those platforms:
Linkedin, Workinstartups.com, Angel.co, @Pyme_team
There are lots of opportunities on twitter (if you follow the right accounts @TheOyinbooke @AlchemyPlatform @SadeeqAkintola @jessica_xls @koderHolic @Alexa_Ighodaro @MyAspirants) & on Discord servers
Check top.gg

Although a lot of companies post job openings on these platforms, it is good practice to check the career page on the websites of the companies that you’re interested in as companies will always post job openings on their career page before posting on job platforms.
Tip 3.
Tailor your cover letter and resume for each job that you are applying to.
Whenever you read through a job description, there will always be a section where the company would highlight their qualities (if they don’t, google the company and look at their-
vision & mission statements). Also look at the skills required and “nice to have” qualities. These qualities and skills would be the building blocks in your cover letter and resume. This will also help you bypass the Applicant tracking system (ATS) & Candidate matching software-
that most recruiters use to screen out candidates. You can also use the Teal extension when looking for jobs on LinkedIn: the extension automatically highlights the qualities in the job description that should be in your application.
Although job descriptions can be daunting, it is common industry knowledge that if offered a job at a company, you might not use 35% of the skills required when initially applying for the job
Note: your cover letter is your “intro” to the company or recruiter that vocalizes why-
you want to work with them. Check Wonsulting bit.ly for more cover letter templates. Attached is a sample of one of their sample cover letters and a screenshot of @teal_hq .
