There's a new corporate trend... but it's poison to you.
Why 'Quiet Quitting" is lazy and terrible for you in the long term.
What is 'Quiet Quitting?'
This term refers to employees stopping from going above and beyond at their job.
Instead, they have resolved to only do the bare minimum of their job responsibilities.
On one hand I GET IT.
Burnout from Covid-19
During the pandemic, millions lost their jobs or quit.
A smaller workforce led to increased strain on existing employees to pick up the slack--work nights & weekends to complete extra projects.
Often w/ no extra pay.
Evolution of the Great Resignation
The idea is... instead of straight up resigning, quiet quitting is a way for employees to set boundaries and protect their time.
Prioritizing family > Organizing a company party for no extra pay.
Renouncing Hustle Culture
• 25% of people are doing the bare minimum
• 30% of quiet quitters are in the 25-34 age group
With stimulus checks and easy money from social media stardom, we've conditioned people to no longer work hard. And made it "cool" to coast.
Tipping into a Recession
With real inflation at ~12% and interest rates rising (~7%), the party is going to end soon.
The logic makes sense:
You want to live life.
You want fair pay for your work.
You're unhappy so just easy route it.
Problem - the easy path never leads to real happiness.
You'll never progress in your career.
You'll never find what truly makes you happy.
You'll never live up to what you can do.
You won't achieve financial freedom.
Let's flip the script.
Here's four things I would do instead of quiet quitting.
1. Communicate
Want to quiet quit? Tell your employer what you SPECIFICALLY want, and what you will give to the company for those wants. Use your words.
Give your boss a chance to be a d*ck that says no. They might say yes and surprise you.
2. Negotiate
Identify win-win solutions of how you can continue to add value.
i.e. Work extra weekends at a trade show for 20% commission on new clients you close.
i.e. Take every Friday off, if you hit your OKRs.
3. New Gig
Go work for someone else.
There are 10.7 million job openings in the US right now.
Never a better time than to find a gig you actually like that fits your lifestyle.
4. Buy a Business
Become your own boss by buying a business.
You don't have to start from scratch--there are 11 million smalls businesses for sale in the US.
Sidenote: this is 3x more work, no quiet quitting possible when you're in charge.
5. Part time Specialist
Don't work for hours any more. Work for projects on a part time basis.
Many of my 1099's earn more than my W2's because they bet on themselves and are hyper specialists.
Then if you don't like one client... you don't quit.. you fire them.
TLDR:
Don't be lazy.
It's not cool to not work hard. It never has been.
It is cool to work in a way that still lets you live your life and love work.
You can actually have it all. But not if you use the word quit.
