How I Deal With The Workplace Blame Game In A High Pressure Role: Thread//
The blame game is hard to avoid in almost every work place.
If you want to build a successful career, there is often no avoiding this game.
You must learn to deal with it, however works best for you.

I'm a navigational officer and I run the live operations of a busy shipping port.
It's part of my job to communicate with all third party companies also essential to the day to day running of the port.
So when others get their job wrong, fingers often point my way.

I stopped doing favours.
I know how to do a lot of stuff within the port that is not in my job description, and I often helped other people when I wasn't busy.
But then fingers pointed for not doing other people's jobs for them when I was busy doing my own.
Never again.

I always call them out, to their face, not to a superior.
If I tell a superior, a small situation explodes and I look defensive. If I tell them to their face they want to avoid it getting back to a superior and they back off.

I'm not intimidated by those who believe they're superior.
There are a lot of high paid roles in my industry, occupied by the upper classes.
Their ego is too big to admit mistakes, but if people find out they won't take responsibility for their actions, they becomes vulnerable

So when these guys try and pass blame to my desk, I'll always say something like this..
"I was in work yesterday and if you asked me to do that I would have said no, who did you speak to?"
They then back off to protect their own ego.

They then learn that I know my job and I have a pair of balls.
They only try it as most people in my world are intimated by those positions and wouldn't dare answer back.
Those positions have no real authority over mine, so I refuse to be that person.
And it works everytime.

I am not afraid to hang up the phone.
Third parties love to make things up and threaten to fine my company when I won't do their job for them, it's an attempt to try and expose any inexperience and take advantage of it.
As soon as I hear a threat the phone goes down.

They always phone back and change their tone massively.
Again I don't tell superiors as I would look defensive and the third party won't complain because they weren't expecting me to get onto their sly game.
They are much less likely to try it again with me after.

Confidence.
I display confidence socially even though sometimes I'd rather just keep myself to myself and do my job.
If you're not confident the blame will always go your way because timid people are no good at defending themselves.
Easy targets.

I defend others.
Sometimes people will blame my colleagues, to me.
Straight away I explain why that wasn't their fault so they'll think twice before they ever accuse me.
Even though my colleagues don't always have the confidence to defend me back, it's still beneficial to me

I provide as much value as possible.
It's easy for false blame to be taken seriously when you aren't providing any value. They could be awaiting for any excuse to take action against you.
My superiors don't want me in trouble, and false blame against me often backfires.

I put safety first.
I am ex-coastguard rescue and safety is everything to me at work.
My role now is also safety critical and my experience is invaluable to the company.
The fact that nobody has ever been in harms why on my watch makes them have my back.
'Nobody died'

I don't get caught up in the game myself.
Those who pass blame tend to believe themselves, many then lose track of their actual responsibilities.
Weak minded people who get blamed often just blame someone else, making them a bigger target.

I'm pursuing Financial Independence.
Even though I love my job, if I relied on it, it gives power to the company.
With Financial Independence there will be no fear of the blame game at all anymore and I can do my job properly without stress for as long as I am happy.

To summarise, I basically make blaming me not worth the effort for the other person. I try and make it backfire.
I don't allow anyone to have a hold over me and I show no fear or weaknesses. (Even though I have both)
It doesn't make it stop, but it makes it sustainable.
