The KhiIafat movement was, by definition, lsIamic.
Also known as the Caliphate movement, its goal was to oppose British sanctions against the Caliph and restore the Ottoman Caliphate's Caliph.
Why did Shri Bharatikrishnateertha ji (143rd Shankaracharya of Puri mutt) support it?
Why did he ignore his Varnasharam Dharma and associate himself with the notorious Ali brothers? He can be seen seated between the two, thigh to thigh them.
He answered these questions when he was acquitted by the court. In his own words,
... he believed Ali brothers and himself to be "blood brothers". This statement was issued even as Hindus were r@ped and slaughtered like pigs in Moplah.
In his address to the Jury, he mentions his speeches at Karachi.
There he had appealed to all Hindus that it's their स्वधर्म to sympathize with the Khilafat movement. He then went on to equate Benaras with Mecca by narrating a story from Bhavishya Purana that equates them.
(For exact speech and the story, refer SS).
He then cited the example of Adi Shankaracharya who, as per him flew as a parrot to Mecca and performed worship with tulasi and holy water of Benaras!
He believed that helping the Khilafat movement was every Hindu's duty and he asserted the same when he was released.
What's tragic is that, Jagadguru Shankaracharya ji failed to understand the repercussions of such a call. He had failed to understand that THEY don't think twice before slaughtering even blood brothers.
It's unfortunate that a man in the position of a Jagadguru was so secular.
Thank you @MrConstantine10 for helping me with some of the research.
