This thread begins with the 1950s, because we must forget everything before the Wars. And we must forget how almost all other societies have lived. The lonely 1950s housewife must be the only manifestation of women's work that has ever existed.
Create a problem --> industrialization & enclosure upend traditional lifestyles leading to a brief period of middle-class wealth while losing ability to be self-sufficient, while the wealth spread threatening the profits & control of the business class
React ---> businesses & media fund discontent via women's mags, create a consumer culture of competition & inadequacy while selling pills to reinforce idea that people are bored, remove soft power from communities so strivers feel forced to hunt it by joining workforce
Solution ---> 2 incomes necessary for most people to have a family. Less time to produce, more need to spend money in the market to replace loss of self-sufficiency. Even child-rearing becomes a task for the market. No time to build community = no threats to power structure.
Anyone who defends the "answer" to post-war post-industrialization problems, an answer which dismantled homes & broke families, is defending the Machine. We must find a way out of the Machine, not further in.
