UX Strategy is such an interesting field to play in. You need to answer the question “why are we doing this?” and without a solid answer, your solution may be compromised.
For example, I asked a client why they needed a website and what ensued was pretty interesting.
“Oh a website is absolutely necessary. It’s going to have a homepage that speaks about our theory of change then when you click it, it will have…” and they went on to describe what they wanted their website to look like.
Their response did not answer my question, but I listened intently & jotted down points from what they were sharing. When they were done, I said “Thank you. You’ve given me a clear picture of what you want your website to look like. But WHY do you believe you need this website?”
The client then told me that they were trying to reach xyz person and abc company.
So now I’ve learned what they want the website to look like and who they want to reach. But what I’ve still not learned is WHY?? What are you trying to achieve with this website?
What value is it supposed to bring to your business? What is it supposed to do?
Without digging deep enough to uncover that “why” we may build a product that runs on shaky legs (weak strategy) and will affect every other aspect of the project, including and especially outcomes.
