The key idea :
A 100 veda-statements cannot prove fire's cold/non-luminous. veda-interpretation should not contradict other valid means of knowledge, such as direct perception, inference, etc.
This is from Śāṅkarabhāṣya on Gītā 18.66.
This exemplifies the caliber of thought of our Pūrvācāryas & the ideal we must aspire to reclaim before climbing further.
We must not be content with what our Pūrvācāryas have achieved, though but strive for greater heights. But at the very least, we must not fall below the standards where we have already fallen to, by justifying the indefensible.
I stress on climbing further because some of us ascribe omniscience to not just Pūrvācāryas but even recent ones, with no sense of proportion. Such personality cultisms hold back our Dharma from realising its fullest intellectual potential.
