MTN EDITION📈📱
[THREAD]
This is a lengthy thread so grab some tea and let’s learn something about MTN.
Contents:
1)Understanding the company
2)Economic moat
3)Financials
4)Leadership & Management
1.1/ Understanding the company
MTN is a multinational mobile telecommunications company and has grown into one of the largest companies in its sector.
Its two main operations are:
-MTN South Africa
-MTN Nigeria
These two operations make up two-thirds of the business.
1.2/ MTN South Africa
Evidently, South Africa has many economic and political challenges.
Despite this fact, South Africa is an attractive market for MTN to operate in.
Data traffic grew by 58.3% in FY2021.
In early 2022, MTN South Africa secured a high-demand spectrum to support their 4G and 5G expansion drive.
MTN South Africa is 100% owned by MTN Group.

1.3/ MTN Nigeria
MTN Nigeria is 75.6% owned by MTN Group.
In April 2022, MTN Nigeria commenced operations of MoMo, which will help scale the FinTech business and achieve more financial inclusion.
MTN Nigeria data traffic grew by 85.5% in FY2021.📈
MTN Nigeria has faced problems such as the suspension of the sale and activation of new sims.
MTN Nigeria responded by getting 67% of its subscriber base to submit their NINs.

1.4/ Products
MTN offers products to both individuals and businesses.
They offer voice services, data services, wireless services, SMS services, digital and fintech services, telemetry services, wholesale, roaming services, and mobile devices.
But wait, there is much more👇
Network is also one of their services.
This includes “subsea cables providing international connectivity services; terrestrial and metro fiber networks; data centers and cable landing stations; and FTTx, towers, and radio access networks.”

FinTech:
MTN offers digital financial services, such as access payments, e-commerce, insurance, lending and remittance services, enterprise services, unified communications, Internet of Things, software-defined networks, API products, and services for telecommunication.
They have a total of more than 270 million subscribers in 19 different markets across two continents.
We can clearly see that there is more to MTN than what meets the eye. 🧐
1.5/ Times haven’t always been great
The company faced a few years of negative performance, which affected the share price accordingly.
However, thanks to its strong cash position and new operating structure, the company positioned itself to capitalize on the next opportunity.
2/ Economic moat
An economic moat is a sustainable competitive advantage.
Most telecommunication businesses carry the moat of high switching costs.
Switching service providers often comes with financial costs as well as an inconvenience cost.
Nobody likes switching cell phone numbers or buying additional equipment.

3/ Financials
4/ Leadership and management
Leadership can make or break a business.
As investors, we should evaluate the people who we are entrusting with our money.
CEO: Ralph Mupita
Ralph Mupita has been CEO of MTN for 2 years.
He has held various executive positions at Scancom Plc, Rand Merchant Investment Holdings Limited, Old Mutual Emerging Markets, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, Individual Life, and UAP Holdings Limited.
He attended executive programs at London Business School and graduated from Harvard Business School.
Before taking on the role of MTN CEO, Ralph was the CFO up until 2020.
He owns approximately 0.033% of the company.
He is a man who has truly done and seen it all.👌
CFO: Tsholo Molefe
Tsholo Molefe has been Group CFO since April 2021.
She holds other executive positions at Scancom Plc, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC, Yellow Pages, and First Avenue Investment Management.
Prior to joining MTN, she was CFO at Telkom SA SOC Limited.🖥️
Tsholo Molefe has also held high positions at Eskom, namely Interim CEO, Group Executive, and Finance Director.
Is this a red flag for investors even though she is clearly trusted in key roles?🤔
COO: Jens Schulte-Bockum
Jens Schulte-Bockum has served as Non-Executive Director of MTN Nigeria Communications PLC since 2017 and has been Group COO since 2017.
Jens has massive experience in the consumer business, as he was also CEO of Vodafone GmbH.💸
He was also the Chief Operating Officer of Vodafone German and of Vodafone Libertel N.V.
He was responsible for the global purchase of over 60 million handsets a year during his time at VodaFone.
He owns about 0.0028% of the company.
In conclusion, the team seems well equipped to handle the growth of the business, and the business is well positioned for the evolution of the industry.
