The Reason Behind Breaking Coconut On Auspicious Occasion
The coconut is known as "Sriphal" in Sanskrit.Sriphal means the fruit of God.Coconut has a very strange characteristic, unlike other fruits. The coconut has a hard, dark shell on d outer side, but is soft & white on d inside
According to our ancient writings, the outer part is considered anger, ego, all the negative thoughts and qualities of a person, while the inner part is considered pure, innocent, all thoughts and qualities are positive.
When we break a coconut while worshiping at home or
at the temple, we make sure, in the name of the deity, that we will break all our negative qualities to obtain a new pure soul with all kindness.
other Reasons:
According to Hinduism an individual consists of 3 bodies (śarīras)
1sthūla śarīra — gross physical body represented by the external husk of the coconut
2sūkṣma śarīra — subtle or astral body consisting of the mind, emotions etc. represented by the white kernel
3kāraṇa śarīra — causal body consisting of the seeds of
subliminal latent impressions (saṁskāras) the cause of rebirth represented by the water inside.
The three eyes on the top represent the 2 physical eyes and the third eye of wisdom (jñāna cakṣuḥ ज्ञान चक्षु).
The breaking of the coconut as an act of sacrifice - self-sacrifice for the welfare of all beings. We hope and pray that we may use this human birth to benefit others and for the service of all beings (sarva-bhūta-hita).
