Got some fresh @googleearth imagery of Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai, and it looks to me like China has commenced construction of at least one additional Type 055 (Renhai-Class) cruiser/destroyer.
First, as circled at the top above, you can see what looks like a prefabricated module for the characteristic Renhai superstructure, dominated by spots for its 4 phased array radars.
Here it is compared with an already-launched Type 055, at similar scale. Looks like a pretty good match to me.
Next, as circled in the lower right of the overall shot above, we see the bow of what looks like a surface combatant peeking out from one of the construction halls. No idea why it appears to be misaligned with the building and tracks, perhaps it's an artifact of the shot angle.
It's not 100% clear from this little detail what class of ship this will be, but again in comparison to a Type 055, it looks like a pretty good match.
So, if these are Type 055 parts it's unclear to me whether these are for 2 different hulls, or if the superstructure module is set up to loaded onto the hull after it's rolled out of the construction, making it only one hull in total. TBD.
Regardless, what does seem apparent is that the first 8 Type 055s the PLA Navy built don't seem likely to be the last. As a reminder, these are the largest surface combatants (i.e., not carriers) under construction anywhere in the world right now. thedrive.com
And at the same time, we have what looks like 5 Type 052D destroyers under simultaneous construction in a dry dock up at the Dalian shipyard.
One more thing: while pretty grainy, this Sentinel shot from yesterday (9/7) looks to me like that peek-a-boo surface combatant has probably been rolled out of the building, see comparison to the 2nd shot (on the right) from 8/11 with the merchant hull that used to be there.
