Infectious diseases in a few maps
From someone yearning for travel
1. Meningitis belt
Areas in Sub-Saharan African with high incidence of meningococcal meningitis
2. Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever)
Common in Southwestern US
I was lucky enough to have seen a few cases while I was in LA
3. Melioidosis
This is a map from 10 years ago, when the disease was endemic only in S/SE Asia and Northern Australia
Now we know it has spread far and was recently found endemic in parts of Mississippi
4. Dengue
Areas bounded by the winter 10°C isotherms in both hemispheres are where its vector, Aedes mosquitoes, survive best
Obviously, these areas are expanding because of global warming
5. Artemisin resistant malaria
Kelch 13 (K13) mutations are associated with artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum
The hot spot is in SE Asia around Cambodia
6. Polio
Only 2 polio-endemic countries remain: Afghanistan and Pakistan
Sporadic cases are still found from time to time elsewhere though
7. Yellow fever
I wish I could travel to some yellow fever endemic countries one day...
8. mcr gene variants
mcr genes are responsible for colistin resistance
The global spread is alarming
9. Tickborne flaviviruses
I just wanna find another map containing Europe (my favourite continent) so I think of this
I still have difficulty remembering the name of all those viruses
10. Cholera
As suggested by @GhulamDhabaan, this is a map showing the global burden of cholera (data from 2015-2019)
Major ongoing outbreaks are being reported from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria
