15 Things Every Girl Needs to Hear From Her Father
(from a dad of 4 girls)
// a thread 🧵
For us at least, raising boys has been different than raising girls.
Girls need to be loved differently.
One of the ways she needs to be loved is through your words.
Here are some of the things she needs to hear...
“Don’t settle. Who you marry will be the single most important decision of your life.”
Dads, set the bar high. Your actions... who you are as a man and as a husband... show her how she should be treated.
Don’t just tell her she’s beautiful.
Tell her she’s smart, brave and strong.
It’s ok to tell her she’s a “warrior” when she fights through adversity.
Sometimes, she just needs you to listen.
Not to fix it...
Just
Listen
Let her know,
“You’ll probably get your heart broken... love is risky but worth it.”
and
“Remember how it feels... you’ll break hearts too.”
"You
Will
Make
Mistakes
Make sure you learn the lesson."
“Don’t let anyone's opinion of you, define you.
The quicker you let go of what other people think, the quicker you’ll fly."
Your daughter needs to hear, “I forgive you.”
Like every other relationship, you’ll have to work through hard times.
You’ll both say and do things that need healing.
She also needs to hear, “I’m sorry.”
You'll mess up.
Asking for forgiveness goes a long way.
Apologizing doesn’t show weakness...it shows strength.
She needs to know, “It’s okay to be alone.”
Teach her that being alone isn’t the same as being lonely.
Being alone can be a time
to plan,
to grow,
to reflect,
to create and
to process what’s next.
When she's older, teach her to “Be adventurous. Travel. Do things that make your heart race.”
The best way to encourage her is to do them with her.
Adventure gives her courage and confidence.
She wants to feel safe and she needs to know you’ll protect her, no matter what.
Studies show that 81% of women have experienced sexual harassment in public places.
Always believe her and always stand up for her.
She needs to hear, “I’m proud of you.”
Four little words that fill her with confidence.
Dad's, our daughters don't stop needing us when they go off to college or even when they get married.
They need us to stand firm in their storms, for the rest of their lives.
The most important thing your daughter needs to hear from you are the words, “I love you.”
Look her in the eyes and tell her... every day... multiple times a day.
She’ll mess up.
She’ll stay out past curfew.
She’ll talk back.
She’ll make big mistakes.
Don’t ever let her doubt your love.
