πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Unit 6, the last unit operating unit at the #Zaporizhzhia #nuclear power station in #Ukraine, was shut down at 03.41 local time on 11 September (Sunday), state operator Energoatom said. Preparations underway for its cooling and transfer to a cold state. 1/7
/7 The six-unit station has been operating in β€œisland mode” for several days, using Unit 6 – the only operating reactor – to generate electricity for crucial cooling systems.
/7 The facility was disconnected from the grid last week after all its power lines were disconnected as a result of fighting in the area.
/7 Energoatom, the state-run operator of all 15 nuclear units at four nuclear stations in Ukraine, said one of the power lines was restored on Saturday night, allowing operators to shut down the last reactor.
/7 β€œA decision was made to shut down power unit No 6 and transfer it to the safest state – cold shutdown,” Energoatom said.
/7 Electricity supply to the plant has been cut with increasing frequency over the past few weeks, including at least three times last week.
/7 Energoatom said the risk of continued damage to the supply line β€œremains high” and that it did not want to risk the plant being powered by diesel generators, β€œthe duration of which is limited by the technological resource and the amount of available diesel fuel”.
