Let's dive inπŸ‘‡
πŸ”ΈA statement of purpose is the face of your application.
It's supposed to give insights into you as a person, your goals & your skills.
It CANNOT be an elaboration of just your CV ❌❌❌
πŸ”ΈJust like one's facial expressions are as important as their words when they are speaking to you...
similarly, the tone of your SoP is as important as the textual content of it.
So the goal is to make that tone appealing and persuasive. How to do that?
πŸ”ΈThe answer:
Engage in storytelling.
Let the readers immerse in your experiences.
Allow the readers to relate to you.
Evoke emotions of wonder, empathy & curiosity.
πŸ”ΈThat's the only way to keep a human being hooked to your SoP.
Start with a story. Try answering questions such as:
πŸ”ΈWhen was the first time I realised I wanted to pursue field X seriously?
Which instance of my life have helped me shape my career goals?
What do I think about the research trends in field X?
How do I think the field can do better?....
πŸ”ΈDon't shy away from being metaphorical, poetic or philosophical (just make sure it's done in moderation & doesn't seem forced upon).
Use evocative imagery to add layers to your writing that facilitates readers' imagination.
πŸ”ΈLet them be in your shoes for the duration that they are reading, you'll likely leave a strong impact on the reader!πŸ’ͺ🏼
