The reason why you always feel mentally drained:
Modern life is a war zone for the mind.
You get bombarded with more choices every day.
New flavours, different colors, more options.
This variety has its benefits, but it comes at a cost…
Decision fatigue.
Self-control is like a battery.
You drain this battery with every decision you make.
Where does this lead you?
Decision fatigue leads to a lack of self-control.
You’re more likely to give in to cheap dopamine.
Ever wondered why the candy bars are near the checkout in the supermarket?
But there’s more…
Being worn out by too many decisions can lead to making no decision at all.
You look at your to-do list and feel so overwhelmed that you end up doing nothing at all.
In other words, you procrastinate.
The good news?
Here are 5 tips to help you reclaim your mental energy:
1. Reduce decisions
How many of the decisions you do daily are necessary?
You don’t need 20 items on your to-do list - cut it down to 3.
Wear the same thing every day and put a meal plan on rotation.
Routines replace decisions.
The result?
More mental energy.
2. Decide fast
“One should decide within the space of 7 breaths”
-Yamamoto Tsunetomo
Does it matter if it’s chocolate or vanilla flavour?
You’re an adult. Decide and move on.
The 7 breaths rule makes decisions faster & the mind sharper.
3. Default “no”
If you can’t decide, you can always rely on the default no.
Set one priority and reject everything that is not aligned with it.
Say: “Sorry right now I’m turning down all commitments”.
Follow this for a week and everything will get easier.
4. First things first
Don’t waste your morning scrolling Twitter
Instead plan your most important tasks the night before and tackle them right in the morning.
Make hard decisions when your battery is high - slow down as the day goes on.
Move with your energy, not against it.
5. Chill out
Productivity gurus will hate me for this but:
Allow yourself to slack off.
Read a book, go for a walk or watch Netflix.
Go hard for 4 hours in the morning so you can relax without guilt later on.
One last thing:
Observe yourself.
Instead of beating yourself up when you lose self-control, use the opportunity to learn about yourself.
You’ll spot patterns and situations where you’re most likely to fall off the train.
The more you learn, the more you can change & adapt.
A great way to recharge your “mental batteries” is by having a routine.
I wrote down the most effective routines that allow you to start your day with energy and optimize your sleep in the evening.
