How to Get Your Brain to Focus:
(and why you're always distracted)👇
1) Attention Span
When we work in front of a computer, and our phone is nearby...
We focus on one thing for just 40 SECONDS before we switch to something else.
If we have things like Slack/WhatsApp open, this lowers to 30 seconds.
2) The Root of the Problem
Many of us think it's a 'distraction' problem
When in fact, our brains are over-stimulated
In today's age, the 'Novelty Bias' acts against us as our brain rewards us with hits of Dopamine every time we check social media
3) Boredom
When we go from a state of high-stimulation to low-stimulation, we ente boredom.
Something rare when a phone's in your pocket.
BUT what we miss when we are never bored is the expansion of our attention span that happens
Why?
Because there's fewer distractions.
4) Scatterfocus
When we give our minds the ability to be bored daily our brain goes to 3 places:
Past
Present
Future
The amount we mind-wander to each stage is surprising.
(it doesn't add up to 100% b/c sometimes our minds are simply blank)
5) Mind Wandering
Commit to activities that do not include your phone:
Walking
Massages
Meditation
Simply sitting and doing nothing
6) Disconnect at Night
Falling asleep while looking at your phone gives your brain no ability to rest.
Fall asleep while thinking freely so your subconscious has free reign to go to work while you're asleep.
This is how I do it.
Does is always work? Of course not.
But the process allows me to regain focus shortly after falling off.
