I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge how far design tools have come and how much we take for granted now. It’s no wonder Figma is so popular. Let’s not lose it.

Design in the browser – what a crazy thought that was 8 years ago. I was a native believer but this changed my mind simply because sharing and collaboration are so good now. This deeply influenced the whole industry to reimagine their approach to collaboration.
Amazing community for files and plugins. So many great ideas, functionalities for content generation, animations, prototyping, adaptive layout were born from the community. Now we have a Dribbble inside Figma that’s more friendly to beginners with source files. ++ for stability.
Effortless auto layout and constraints. I think Figma effectively convinced designers to learn adaptive layouts and ultimately work better with engineers. It also moved the source of truth further to the design tool as designs became closer to design systems.
Inspect, version control, commenting, real-time collaboration. Figma feels like 5 major tools in one and that’s why so many teams have come to depend on it daily. Their feedback system have saved us so many meetings.
Dead-simple and powerful prototyping with sharing & mobile support. As we move to more dynamic designs, there’s a clear difference between quick prototyping in Figma and high-fidelity prototype-as-you-build in CSS and SwiftUI. It’s no longer a war and we need both approaches.
I can’t help but feel like the journey could have been far greater if Figma remained its own entity, answering to its own dreams. They did so many things right. On the other hand, the community has the power and that will never change.
