Here is how India's mainstream media and their star anchors @ShivAroor @chitraaum @sudhirchaudhary @RajatSharmaLive spread false information on the national TV and run propaganda of the ruling party BJP. (1/n)
On 2 september, Indian Navy introduced new ensign inspired by chhatrapati shivaji's royal seal. And removed St. George's Cross from its flag. PM Modi unveiled this new ensign and said that India has shed traces of colonial past.
Previously, St. George's Cross was dropped from the Indian Navy flag in 2001 and for some reason, St. George's Cross was brought back to the Indian Navy's flag in 2004. This started a debate on mainstream media that why the sign of colonial past was restored back in 2004.
On 30 August, India Today's editor and anchor @ShivAroor claimed in his show #5iveLive that in 2001 Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt removed the St. George's Cross from Indian Navy flag. But, in 2004 St. George's cross was brought back on the Indian Navy flag in UPA Government.
Another hillaruous thing happend in the same show. While introducing India Today anchor @gauravcsawant, Shiv Aroor said the Gaurav Sawant was the one who broke the story when St. George's cross was reinstated to Indian Navy flag under Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2004.
On 31 August, @ShivAroor again in the India Today #NewsMo video claimed that the Manmohan Singh government brought back the St. George's Cross on Indian Navy flag. Note that Shiv Aroor is also the founder of Indian defense and aerospace news site @livefist
On 1 September Aaj Tak 'Black&White' show, news anchor @sudhirchaudhary repeated the same claim that when UPA government came to power and Dr. Manmohan Singh became PM, St. George's Cross was brought back on the Indian Navy Flag in 2004.
BJP MP @Tejasvi_Surya and BJP Spokesperson @TajinderBagga claimed that St. George's cross was removed from Navy flag in 2001 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the PM, but when UPA came to power in 2004, they brought it back. BJP accused congress of slavish and colonial mindset.
BJP Goa and Right Wing Influencer @AskAnshul spreaded the same claim that the St. George's Cross was brought back to the Indian Navy flag in 2004 during the Congress government. Later Anshul Saxena deleted his tweet.
On 2 Sept. AajTak Dangal show, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia spreaded same lie and the anchor @chitraaum backed his claim that after the government changed in 2004, St. George's Cross was brought back on Indian Navy flag and asked congress spokesperson the reason of this love?
On 3 Sept, India TV editor-in-chief @RajatSharmaLive claimed in his show 'Aaj Ki Baat' that in 2001 Vajpayee govt removed british symbol (St. George's Cross) from Indian Navy flag. But in 2004 when Dr. Manmohan singh govt came to power, they brought the St. George's cross back.
Here comes the FACT-CHECK
First I checked the 2001 Atal Bihari Vajpayee claim. With advanced search and filters on Google, I found both digital and original scanned copy of Press Information Bureau (PIB) release that says on 15 August 2001, the Navy flag was changed.
Taking a step further, I searched questions on Lok Sabha website and found a reply of Unstarred question to Thawar Chand Gehlot by the then defence minister George Fernandes, where he said that Indian Navy adorned new naval insign on 15 August 2001. There is other details too.
Now comes the part of fact-checking the claim that whether in 2004, during Manmohan Singh govt (UPA) tenure, St. George's Cross was brought back to Indian Navy flag? I did keyword search on Google with date filter and came across a 24 April, 2004 article on reddif.
The reddif article says that Indian Navy will bring back the St. George's Cross on Indian Navy flag, ensign and pendants on 25 April 2004. Now note that on 25 April, 2004, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the PM. While Manmohan singh sworn as the Prime Minister of India on 22 May 2004.
Taking a note from the reddif article, I searched for archive of The Hindu and Financial Express and found reports published on 24 April 2004 of changing Navy Insign stating the reason of the new blue and white colour gets blended in high sea and becomes invisible.
Moving a step further, I searched questions on Rajya Sabha website and found a reply by the then defence minister Pranab Mukherjee on 14 July 2004. He replied Ekanath K. Thakur that new ensign of Indian Navy was introduced on 25 April 2004. He also stated the reason of change.
So' Indian media and their star anchors, some of them alleged defense experts spread false information about the UPA govt and Dr. Manmohan Singh that St. George's Cross was brought back to the Indian Navy flag during his tenure in 2004. This is how media runs BJP's propaganda.
