🧵 United’s back 4 has received praise for our recent good form, and rightly so. However, they’ve been the beneficiaries of a more compact unit out of possession, with a solid midfield pairing in front of the CBs and wide players that have been very disciplined off the ball.
I’ve tweeted this many times before, but you do defend as a team. Dalot, Varane, Martinez and Malacia have done decently well so far, I’m happy about their performances. However we’ve defended better as a team on the whole.
As this stat showed, United have had the deepest defensive line in the PL this season. Obviously there’s many factors involved, every team has played different fixtures so you can’t read too much into these stats- but it’s interesting.

United have often transitioned between a high press, a mid-block and a low-block this season. It’s ideally not what Ten Hag wants to do long term- but it’s a short term solution for now, with the goalkeeper we have + to build more discipline and reduce goals conceded.
When Ten Hag acquires more of the correct profiles, namely a more proactive goalkeeper who also has decent ball-playing attributes, a midfield player who can improve our transition from the 1st to 2nd phase of build-up, also a reliable, more well- rounded, physical ST…
Then we will see Ten Hag’s principals executed more efficiently. He will have to adapt, you always do when you have different players, but he’ll want to be more proactive and expansive in the future- particularly against “bigger” teams.
