Haceta, the genesis piece of my new series “This is Not a Photo”, is now live on @SuperRare!
If you would like to learn more, come with me on a little journey... 👇
2/ First, here’s the link to the piece on @SuperRare.

The reserve has been set and this entire thread will be immortalized in the blockchain via the metadata of the mint. Thanks @batsoupyum
3/ Now, the fun begins. Let’s start with the name of the series. “This is Not a Photo” is a tribute to surrealist painter René Magritte’s work "La Trahison des Images" (English: The Treachery of Images) also known as “This is Not a Pipe” (French: Ceci n'est pas une pipe)
4/ Rene was known for challenging observes preconditioned perceptions of reality and was a massive influence on minimalist, conceptual and pop art. This painting of challenged representations vs. reality. I ran a my own little experiment with "Haceta"
5/ So maybe you’ve read this far, watched the promo video
You seen the image.
It’s not a photo. It’s not a painting. So what the heck is it?
To answer that question, I want to start at the beginning…
6/ For a long time, I’ve thought about this question...
“What if you could recreate a memory?”
7/ Take this photo of Vermillion Lake in my home of the Canadian Rockies..
This photograph captures a singular moment. A single point in space and time absorbed through a sensor from the artists perspective.
8/ A time-lapse on the other hand is a cluster of photos captured in succession, displayed in order to represent time from a single point in space.
9/ Video is a cluster of 24, 30, 60, 120 photos captured every second, aimed at representing movement through both space and time.
10/ These are all incredible mediums, but they fall short in their depth and flexibility. So what's next? How do we capture and recreate a real memory?
11/ Last fall, I began thinking about this problem and exploring ways to bring the real world to life.
How could I recreate a moment from my travels to revisit and relive when I'm 70, 80, 90 and beyond.
Better yet, how could I share these memories with others?
12/ On my 4 month RV trip to the US West Coast last winter, I decided to try to capture a memory...
A visit to Haceta Lighthouse in Oregon...the brightest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast.
13/ The process started with capturing everything about the experience…
14/ Compositions....
15/ Audio...
16/ Historical information...
17/ Textures…
18/ Even ground LiDAR and photogrammetry...
here's an fun example of an onion from photogrammetry
19/ Along with the data from the ground, using my background in GIS I started pulling in data from space and the air.
20/ This allowed me to start to create a 3D recreation of a 2KM by 2KM area around Haceta Head Lighthouse to begin to manipulate with 3D software.
21/ From there, I was able to use satellite data (images captured of this location at roughly the same time I visited - Feb 4th, 2022) to begin to mask out different areas of the terrain.
22/ And then begin to add details like sediment erosion, a water table, and rivers.
23/ From here I could begin to recreate important aspects of the scene like the actual lighthouse and buildings. I used satellite images for exact placements, and schematics from the buildings for actual dimensions.
24/ Even Cape Creek Bridge - a TINY part of the background of the final render was recreated to scale in 3D using reference images and blueprints.
25/ With little details like this tribute to the last video I found on my father’s GoPro before his accident.
The pixels are barely visible in the back of the final render, but these details are ALL inside this 3D scene.
26/ Which brings me to this...why not just create a painting, a photoshop, or even a 3D scene that only looks good from one angle? The answer is there’s so much more to my vision...
27/ The foundation for each render in the “This is Not a Photo” series is a 2KM by 2KM full 3D reconstruction of a single point on earth.
28/ This gives unlimited flexibility in the future including renders from additional angles...
29/ Maybe a future visit in Virtual Reality
30/ Or what about future virtual photography video game experience…
31/ But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. I laid the foundation for all of this on this project I lead for Canon all the way back in 2017.
If you use your imagination a bit, you can see where this is going.
32/ The goals for this series were...
- recreate the area with real world data
- place a virtual camera anywhere in the scene
- have the result recognized by AI software
- have the metadata recognized by @manifoldxyz
33/ Haceta is the genesis piece of “This is Not a Photo” and will be just one of MANY iconic landscape locations that will be converted into 3D environments over the next several years.
The next two in the series are called "Cathedral" and "Kootenai", I'll let you speculate.
34/ The reserve for "Haceta" is 4.69Ξ available on @SuperRare on its own @manifold contract.
I believe this new genre of art is perfect for the metaverse and will an iconic image when the dust settles on Web3. Thanks you for reading 🙏
