Mokshapata - The Original Snakes and Ladder Game.
This game was created by the 13th century saint-poet Gyandev. It was originally called ‘Mokshapata’. Later it became popular in the name of Gyan Chaupar. The other names of this game are: Leelaa, Muktipata or Paramapada. 1
The ladders in the game represented virtues and the snakes indicated vices. The game was played with cowrie shells and dices. In time, the game underwent several modifications, but its meaning remained the same: good deeds take people to heaven and evil to a cycle of re-births. 2
The objective of the game is to exit the Vaikuntha (cosmic consciousness) state, enter the game of life, traverse through the various planes of consciousness, and finally make one’s way back to Vaikuntha. Despite having an objective, this game does not have winners or losers. 3
This game is the origin of the modern day Snakes & Ladders, but with subtle and gross differences.
The number of players is unrestricted and this can be played alone as well. 4
The vertical rows in the center depict the various planes of human consciousness from physical to the sachchidananda.
These rows are also closely analogous to the chakras in the human body. 5
