Two of the biggest talents in the world. Two players at a similar age, playing for different clubs. They rank number 1 & 3 in most valuable U21 players according to Transfermarkt (Pedri: €90m, Musiala, €80m)
After Barca played Bayern, Pedri had to face a lot of disrespect. Without discrediting Musiala for his qualities (which are outstanding), it’s worth comparing them based on the roles they have, which are not the same.
In buildups, Bayern often utilize a 4-2-2-2. Musiala’s position can’t be defined due to Bayern’s fluent system, where players frequently change positions. Still, he plays in an advanced position (attacking midfielder with freedom). His impact is usually in the final third.
As a consequence of that, he will pick up a high number of direct goal contributions (goals & assists). That’s his role. He is less responsible for ball progression as they leave this to Kimmich. This can be seen as Musiala hits half as many passes into the final third as Pedri.
Pedri has more responsibility in Barca’s buildups. He receives the ball deeper, for then to control & progress the play. Pedri has hit 35 progressive passes, & 39 passes entering the final third. Musiala has hit 19 progressive passes, & 18 passes entering the final third.
Their impact in buildups can also be reflected by the amount of touches they have in different areas. In just six games played, Pedri has already registered way more touches in the middle of the pitch & the defensive 3rd. Musiala has more touches in the final third.
With that said, it’s worth mentioning that Pedri is involved in Barca’s attacks further up the pitch, it just happens to be when we pin the opponents back, and less in transitions.
Pedri & Musiala have a similar xA (expected assists - Pedri: 1.5. Musiala: 1.6.). Pedri has 6 pre-assists, while Musiala has 1. Musiala is a bigger goal threat. He generates an higher xG, and averages more shots per game. This is due to his role in the team.
As players, they are different. You have to take that into consideration when comparing them. You can’t do it based on goals only, which you often see on social media. As a Barca fan, I wouldn’t trade Pedri for any player. I guess the same applies for Bayern fans & Musiala.
