To everyone who left Africa in August / September to start a new life in another part of the world, well done but this is just the beginning of the journey. From someone who #Japa in 2008, here are some of my words to you:
βœ… Get your regularization papers asap - health card
identity card, social security card, school ID card, driver’s license, open a bank account, deposit all of your money and get a bank card
βœ… You need both the people from your continents (Africans abroad) and the locals of your new country. So, start building those
relationships as soon as you can
βœ… Join a religious organization. Churches usually will have food drive, free winter jackets and in some cases provide shelter or other support that you may need. So, find a church ASAP
βœ… Join the association of African students within your school. Start meeting fellow Africans and if you need a part-time job to get by, ask for help here with your resume and information about what time of jobs students can get to help them get by
βœ… Get a part-time job or freelance. Exchange rate is not smiling and in some cases, provided funding won’t cover all your needs
βœ… How does securing your permanent residency work here? You need to know now. Will my course earn me an easy pathway to permanent residency
if jobs are used as leverage for permanent residency?
βœ… You need to find international alumni from your school who studied same course. Find them on LinkedIn and conduct informational interviews with them to understand the prospect of your school and the program for Africans
βœ… This isn’t a period to start to show off. You can Write a post on LinkedIn or twitter about where you are now and move on. You need to keep the GPA high to maintain that funding (if you have it) so focus. Focus on understanding your new Professor, your program, equipment
in your lab and softwares you will need
βœ… Don’t use your entire savings on buying new stuffs. Get a few items from thrift stores. There is nothing wrong with using used items. Save most of what you have as you don’t have a job yet. Don’t squander all you have on new items.
I can’t wait to see you excelling πŸ’œ. You got this! #japa
