The Tripitaka Koreana, stored in Haeinsa, a Buddhist temple in Gayasan National Park, South Korea, is the most comprehensive and oldest version of the Buddhist canon, with no known errors in its 52 330 152 characters which are organized in over 1496 titles and 6568 volumes. 2/
Serendipitous data transmission over centuries occurs of course in libraries, but the Tripitaka Koreana is a single uniformly produced series of texts, and the obsessive levels of care taken in its production and storage leave no doubt it was created with eternity in mind. 3/
Each wood block measures 24 centimeters in height and 70 centimeters in length. The thickness of the blocks ranges from 2.6 to 4 centimeters and each weighs about three to four kilograms. The woodblocks are in pristine condition despite being created more than 750 years ago. 4/
Each block was made of birch wood from the southern islands of Korea and treated to prevent the decay of the wood. The blocks were soaked in sea water for three years, then cut and then boiled in salt water. 5/

Work on the first TripiαΉaka Koreana began in 1011 during the GoryeoβKhitan War and was completed in 1087. The act of carving the 6000 woodblocks was considered to be a way of bringing about a change in fortune by invoking the Buddha's help. 10/
This original set of woodblocks was destroyed by fire during the Mongol invasions of Korea in 1232, although scattered volumes printed from these blocks still remain - an example printed in the 11th century is shown here. 11/
To once again implore divine assistance with combating the Mongol threat, King Gojong ordered the revision and re-creation of the TripiαΉaka. The carving began in 1237 and was completed in 12 years, involving monks from both the Seon and Gyo schools. 11/

In the 1960s, Korea's President Park Jung-hee ordered a new state of the art concrete storage facility to be constructed in the hills near Haeinsa Temple. The intention was to transfer the woodblocks to this new location in order to protect them from the danger of fire. 20/
However, when a small portion of the Tripitaka was moved to this new storage building for a trial period, mould - for the first time in 8 centuries - began to form on the woodblocks. The plan to preserve the Tripitaka woodblocks by more 'scientific' methods was abandoned. 21/
This highlights the importance not just of the woodblocks themselves, but the meticulous design and construction of the two wooden halls in which they are kept, which have ensured perfect ventilation, appropriate humidity levels, and an ideal temperature for 800 years. 22/
Beneath the mud floors of the depository chambers, are successive layers of charcoal, then salt and finally limestone. These layers absorb excess moisture during the monsoon season, and release it during the dry winter when humidity levels fall. 23/
The walls of the buildings have wooden lattice windows arranged in pairs. In the southern building of the complex, the lower windows of the front wall are 4 times larger than the upper windows. The upper windows of the back wall are 1.5 times larger than the lower windows. 24/
