As a PoC myself: we don't have to appropriate what the whites created to provide stories for our children.
Are African/ LatAm, Asian, India lores so poor in stories, values and role models that we have to take a Disney character and change the skin color to prove our worth?
And this isn't just about black Ariel alone. I have seen this fallacious thinking in other strands of rebellion too.
They don't like all male Ghostbusters, then they make the same series with all female cast. Think of all male Oceans' Eleven - 13 series, they made one with++
++ all women (Sandra Bullock starrer).
No .. I don't think feminism needs to be an imitation of an a male centric movie.
Women can and should be making series and movies of similar genre on their own and make it a success.
Aping is not empowerment.
Whenever we make a Black Ariel, Black James Bond, Female Ocean, etc.. the argument is that you are breaking stereotypes. But the framework in which you see these things/ create these things were all made by whites / men / both - the groups that you say you are growing up against.
However, you're still stuck in the same framework. Invariably the comparison is going to be with a white Ariel, a white James Bond, or an all male Oceans' cast.
One needs to get out of the framework to challenge it.
It is not as if Disney or Hollywood lacks funds to do this.
End of long rant:
If you want to challenge the dominance of Eurocentric male culture in the arts / creation, you have to seek non European roots. Start ground up. roots are everything; seek them.

Excellent example from the Indian side for the phenomenon
