75% of employees are not living up to their creative potential.
Find your creative workspace by reading this:
-thread-
I have been associated with several sh*tty, unorganized, and poorly led teams.
Many of them lack a growth mindset and a craving for mastery and have a difficult time with employee retention.
It's easy to say that these environments will suck the creativity right out of you.
I tell people who are starting a new career not to focus on the work itself.
Focus on the environment and the people around you.
Be cognizant of their
Values
Beliefs,
Behaviors.
If they do not align with yours and feel it will limit your creativity.
Then BOUNCE!
That is what I did.
It took a couple of times before finding an organization I felt fostered:
Autonomy
Mastery
Purpose
It also believed in developing future leaders, not behaved employees.
Consequently, this job was not easy to attain.
It had been 3yrs before hiring someone new, and the last employee left due to retirement.
This organization knew how to retain its staff, and I wanted to learn why?
Non-Judgemental
They put me in multiple uncomfortable situations.
This included developing a power-point to better the business and present it to the team.
It was intimidating as h3ll telling experienced employees how to be better.
Surprisingly, I did not get one snarky comment, sarcasm, or an eye roll.
Instead, the team pointed out some of the power-points
Strengths
Weaknesses
While also providing constructive feedback
It was interesting how comfortable I became sharing my opinions with these people
Failure is essential
As a result, I quickly fell in love with my job and environment.
But of course, I f*ck up just a month into the job.
In short, I told a client something that I was not supposed to.
My manager then had to come in and fix my mistake.
I thought for sure I was getting demoted or worse, fired.
But that didn't happen.
My manager calmly talked to me about the event.
Explained what I did wrong and how to avoid it next time.
He understood that failure is inevitable and used them as a teaching opportunity.
Change is expected
Lately, we have encountered several competitors who offer the same services but are cheaper.
They began to steal our clientele, and our next meeting was to address this issue.
The meeting reviewed the situation, but I observed no panic on anyone's face.
Instead, they had already pre-prepared for an event like this.
They knew precisely the adjustments they needed to make and how to increase value.
They knew this day would come and prepped themselves for it!
Appreciate Randomness
They understood that random events like these were out of their control.
They prioritized managing what they could control.
This included:
Not blaming others
Troubleshooting quickly
Providing teams with autonomy
Developing precautionary measures
Creative workspace
Lastly, they understood that to develop a creative workspace, it must include
Art & Science
Clear boundaries
Feedback meetings
Learning opportunities
Experimental environment
Research and development
Team-bonding experiences.
To this day, I still work with the organization and have been here for over 10yrs.
I now lead 3 separate programs while continuing to instill the same:
Values
Beliefs
Behaviors
It is amazing to witness the generational effects this type of organization can breed.
