The 'Varman' descendants of a 'Śarman'
An inscription of Kākusthavarman from around 6th century CE tells that the founder of their kingdom was a Brāhmaṇa named Mayūraśarman, who, due an incident in the Pallava kingdom, left his priestly vocation & became a warrior. +
Mayūraśarman's son was Kaṅgavarman. After that, all the descendants have 'Varman' surnames. It's also been noted that in the inscriptions of his later descendants, even Mayūraśarman's name appears as Mayūravarman. +
It is an interesting case of change of the surname based on one's vocation. Mayūra was originally a Brāhmaṇa priest, but became a warrior and his own son became a 'Varman' instead of 'Śarman'.
Are there any other such cases?
