YOU EITHER PRODUCE OR YOU PERISH.
Reading through the pages of Managerial Grid: the key to leadership excellence, a piece co-authored by Robert Blake and Jane Mouton, I learned an important life lesson which I thought of sharing with you.
#Thread
In this book, Blake and Mouton described the Managerial Grid as a 2 edged sword:
1. Concern for people
2. Concern for task/ production.
The Managerial Grid.
They identified five kinds of leadership behaviour using this grid. The Country Club Style, Impoverished Style, Middle of the Road Style, Team Style and Produce-or-Perish Style which is going to be my focus for today.
The produce or perish leadership behaviour have a low concern for People but very High concern for production. The produce or perish leaders care less about what and how you feel, so long you get the job done.
In broader terms, this is what is happening in our society today. People really don’t care about you, no one is interested in how and why you failed, they want to see you get things done. They want to see your productivity. Failure is an orphan, success have many siblings.
Have you consider the people we refer to as ex-champions? Ex-Stars?
Have you asked yourself why they’re regarded as such? They stop producing meaningful results.
If you’re famous and loved by people today in whatever capacity, as a musician, artiste, movie director or a social media influencer, always remember that a larger percentage of your fans and followers are just like the produce or perish leaders.
You either continue to produce or watch you and your influence perish in their minds. Never attach too much importance to fame. You’re just one scandal or failure away from being perish in peoples’ mind and you would be replaced in a jiffy.
But here’s the shocker, you can’t continue to produce forever. Life will happen, shits will happen, new stars in your field will emerge. So don’t kill your self to satisfy the unending fan’s appetite. When fame comes, enjoy the moment.
Have a personal relationship with God, Take care of yourself, love your family and spend time with them, enjoy life when you can, build meaningful relationships with people and help the needy in your capacity. In the end, these are all that truly matter.
Shalom!
