Invaluable Lessons My Grandfather Taught Me About Life:
-Thread-
1. Strong men get more respect.
My grandfather was one of 3 brothers.
His nephews tell me that he was the brother that everyone looked upto because he was the strong one.
You can see the admiration in their eyes when they talk about him, and it matches my own.
2. War should never be glorified.
Being a young child, in my ignorance I used to glorify war when playing with my toy soldiers.
It caused me to ask him about the war excitedly.
He pulled me aside and educated me about the true horrors of war.
Some men never grow out of that
3. Treat woman with respect.
My grandfather was a true gentlemen.
He didn't stand for woman being mistreated and is known to have stepped in to protect woman when the law would not.
4. Integrity
He taught me to live by my morals no matter what.
He refused to use a flamethrower himself during the war.
Being ex forces myself, I know it would take more bravery to refuse this than it would to follow orders and go against your morals.
5. Make the most out of what you already have.
Life after the war wasn't easy, resources were lacking, but my grandfather provided everything to his family.
He could make anything out of a peice of wood and nothing ever went to waste.
He made me a lot of stuff too!
6. Be there for your family.
I never heard my grandfather complain once, if his family had a problem, he would solve it.
When my mum needed him, he was there.
When my dad needed him, he was there.
When his grandchildren asked for him, he was there.
7. Humility.
My grandad was a hero, but that's not a label he would have liked.
He didn't brag about anything, and he achieved so much in life.
He was more concerned about creating a life for his family than he was about taking credit for his actions.
