Everything I’ve learned about getting promoted after 16 years in business:
1. When things go wrong, take ownership. When things go right, praise your team.
2. You must first learn to lead yourself before you can lead others.
3. Be hyper-aware of how you make others feel.
4. No one cares how busy you are.
5. If you want to progress with your career, show your boss you can already work above your pay grade.
6. Get comfortable saying “I don’t know” and "I was wrong".
7. Pulling rank is a sign of weakness.
8. No virtue is more important than being humble.
9. Pleasing your boss doesn’t mean saying ‘yes’ all the time. If you overcommit and fail to do your core tasks, you will look incompetent.
10. Always build relationships. Relationships build trust. Trust is the foundation for a successful team.
11. Help others succeed. They won’t forget it.
12. If you don’t learn from your mistakes, taking ownership of them won’t save you.
13. Communicate often, not lengthy.
14. If you can’t control your emotions, you won’t make it.
15. Be on time.
16. Your rank doesn’t mean you are superior to others. Pick up trash when you walk past it.
17. Don’t shy away from hard conversations. They won’t go away. Only grow in complexity.
18. To get promoted you mustn’t focus on getting promoted. Do your job.
19. Always be friendly with your team. This doesn’t mean you become friends.
20. Everyone on your team is the most important member of the team.
21. Your boss will it when you solve problems.
22. No one will understand your company’s business like the people on the frontline. Always listen to them.
23. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of self-awareness. And that is a sign of being trustworthy.
