There are not many good resources on hiring online.
Especially for agency owners
I've hired and fired many people and learned SO MANY lessons as I have been running my email agency for 4+ years now.
Here are some lessons I learned on hiring team members and VAs
A THREAD:
Before I start!
Retweet, Like, and give me a follow for giving you this KNOWLEDGE
I appreciate you guys and I want to be sharing more value for email agency owners...this is JUST THE START.
I've helped scale many agency owners and want to share my experiences and lessons.
HIRING IS CUSTOM TO YOU:
You can read threads like this to learn and get a perspective but you are a unique person with a unique business.
A person you hire may be perfect for you but not me.
You have different goals, expectations, beliefs, work behaviors, etc.
Don't Rush Hiring:
I made this mistake when I first started to hire because of my lack of knowledge.
I hired the first person that applied that I thought was somewhat qualified.
This back fired as I had to fire them and hire someone new.
Take your time, do it once!
Look for the intangibles:
I look for intangibles like communication, initiative, work ethic etc.
Look for those things that are hard to measure but show a person's character.
Skill is wasted if the intangibles are not there
Make sure they fit the culture:
Don't hire them just because they are skilled.
Make sure they can fit the culture that you set for your team. Make sure you enjoy working with them.
Just like sports, chemistry amongst the team members is important to have effective output.
Hire Long Term
Hire someone that will be with you long term...
It costs a lot of time energy and money to hire and fire someone.
Make sure the person you're hiring understands that it's a long-term job (unless otherwise)
You rather just do it once and do it properly.
Set the expectations straight RIGHT AWAY!
Let them know A-Z of everything that they will be responsible for, how you guys work etc.
Nothing is worse than a person coming into your business and you hitting them with changes they didnt expect.
Part of good communication.
Make success easy for them:
Have SOPs, systems, training, etc. organized for the team member.
Remember, they are working for you...you want them to win.
My friend always said "make success easy"
Make it easy for your team members to execute the work they have to do
Take responsibility and learn:
If something doesn't work out , learn from it
Everyone I hired and fired taught me something about myself as a business owner.
Also, take responsibility when you can.
What could you have done to avoid problems that occurred when hiring?
That's all for today, I don't want to overwhelm you guys with information.
I might make a Notion and Loom for this going in-depth into the topic of hiring.
Ask some questions/topics I need to cover next.
